wyliearticlepic09The Brownwood Lions struggled on offense and defense Friday night as they faced the Abilene Wylie Bulldogs at Gordon Wood Stadium.

Wylie struck first with a touchdown on their first drive of the game and a successful extra point.

The Brownwood Lions answered those points quickly when quarterback Mitch Stephens connects to #12 Dillon Ellis for a 77 yard touchdown pass to tie the game early in the first quarter.

Wylie makes another touchdown and field goal to close out the first quarter with a score of 7-17.

#8 Jaxon Shipley for Brownwood goes in to play a package of plays as quarterback in the 2nd quarter.  After a few plays, Shipley throws an interception and  Wylie drives in for another touchdown a few plays later.

Quarterback Mitch Stephens throws the Lions’ second interception of the game on their next possession and takes a hard hit taking him out of the game with a knee injury.

Wylie drives down again on their possession making another touchdown and a successful 2 point conversion.

The first half closes out with Wylie in the lead 31-7.

The 3rd quarter opens with Brownwood kicking to Wylie.  The Bulldogs drive it down with multiple run plays to make a field goal. Wylie makes another touchdown to close out the 3rd quarter with a score of 7-41.

Brownwood scores near the start of the 4th quarter with a touchdown run my #26 Levi Perez.

In the closing minutes of the 4th, #14 Vance McShan who was playing quarterback for Stephens connects to #8 Jaxon Shipley for a 9 yard touchdown pass in the endzone.

Brownwood loses with a final score of 21-41.

Head Coach Bob Shipley said at the end of the game that he was disappointed with the defense  missing tackles and making poor blocks that made a big impact on the game.

Shipley also said that it looks as if backup quarterback Mitch Stephens will likely be out for the rest of the season, but he will make that determination after an MRI is done on Stephens knee.   Stephens has been playing for starting quarterback Graylon Brown who broke his leg during Brownwood’s game against Stephenville a few weeks ago.   Coach Shipley said that he was pleased with McShan’s performance and will keep him in as quarterback while Stephens and Brown are our injured.

Brownwood will travel to Breckenridge next week for their second district game.
