The Brownwood Lions battled hard against the Big Spring Steers Friday night but came up short of the win with a score of 41-46.  Although they had 4 defensive starters out of the game and a fifth injured during the game, a very young Lion team made an impressive fight against the Big Spring Steers.

According to Brownwood High School Head Football Coach Chuck Howard, there were mostly sophomore players on defense with one freshman stepping up to fill the team’s vacant positions.

“I could not be more proud,” said Coach Howard.  “They poured it out tonight.”

The Lions’ offense dominated in the third quarter scoring in three straight possessions.

“The team gave a tremendous effort, I couldn’t be more proud,” said Howard.  “The offense played tremendously.  I felt like we could dominate them and they couldn’t stop us other than on penalties and fumbles.  All of our players gave a tremendous effort.”

Howard stated that he usually doesn’t complain about officials, and that he did not want to take anything away from the way the team played hard and with such effort; however he stated, “I am disappointed to come out on the short end where I think we had several opportunities, and I’m not one to ever complain about officiating, but there were at least two calls that really, I thought, put us in a situation that cost us the game.”

Turnovers also worked against the Lions’ momentum.  Late in the fourth quarter, the ball was stripped during a kickoff return near mid-field taking away the Lions last chance to score.  Big Spring made the recovery and had the final possession of the ball.

Brownwood finishes up the regular season as 4th seed in District playoffs.  They will face the Graham Steers in Stephenville on Friday, November 14th.  Kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m.  Fans are encouraged to make the drive to Stephenville and support the Lions as they enter the playoffs.
