The Brownwood Lions fell 40-15 after a long battle with the Graham Steers Friday at Gordon Wood Stadium.

The Lions started out strong with the first play of the game, a quarterback sack by Michael Juarez, and played strong defensively in the first quarter allowing only one scoring drive from the Steers.

The young Lions team continued to play good defensively for most of the game and fought hard.  The team, while making many penalties and turnovers, will learn a lot after playing this year’s state ranked Steers, according to Brownwood High School Athletic Director and Head Coach Chuck Howard.

“We are going to work tomorrow, we’re going to correct some things and take care of the ball and fix penalties next week.  Positive things will come from this film,” said Howard.  “This is a very young team they are going to learn from tonight and get better.”

Five BHS turnovers resulted in 26 points scored by Graham.  Howard stated, “We just have to take care of the football, keep our composure and execute.”  He explained that Graham ran the ball extremely well.  He thought the Lions also ran the ball well but had trouble throwing the ball and maintaining possession throughout the game.

“We have to get off the field in the 3rd and 4th down and not allow TDs,” said Howard.  “We’re going to continue to improve and we’ll get where we need to be.”

Howard stated that many of the Lions players came out and played with heart, but that this was a very physical game and defensively the team got tired.  He stated that upcoming games against Liberty Hill next week and Alvarado will also be very physical games.

“These kids are fighting hard, working hard.  They are young kids and have to learn to respond when things don’t go our way and learn to come from behind,” said Howard.

Although exhausted and way behind on the scoreboard, BHS ended the game on the Graham 2 yd line, fighting until the last seconds.

The Lions will face the Panthers in Liberty Hill next Friday, September 12th at 7:30 p.m.  Fans are encouraged to come to the game and support the Lions.
