The Brownwood Lions wrapped up the regular season Friday night with a 41-13 win over Llano and will prepare for playoffs.

Brownwood High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Bob Shipley stated that the team knew they would have to come out and play hard to take the win against a very young but capable Llano team.

“Llano is a fine football team, a very young team and they’re well coached,” said Shipley.  “They were certainly capable of winning this game, so we had to play strong.”

The biggest concern for Shipley in the team’s performance was two personal fouls, which he said cannot happen in the playoffs, he was very concerned about these penalties.

The first quarter, Brownwood scored in their first possession, which was answered by Llano in their next possession.  This made the game an evenly played first quarter; however things would change before the half.

Brownwood scored in the last two minutes of the second quarter, fumbled and then in their next possession scored another time with a huge 70 yard pass for the touchdown.  This was a play that changed the momentum of the game, from which Llano would not recover.

“I was telling Kilgo to get the first down and then run out of bounds to stop the clock,” said Shipley.  “I’m glad he didn’t listen to me for a change.”

He stated that Kilgo is now running with a lot of authority and has made an “amazing metamorphosis” as a running back.  He also mentioned that Dylan Martin’s 28 yard run really helped secure the game in the Lions’ favor and that the offensive line really played well.

Shipley spoke of the senior members of the team who are a very special group that has really grown throughout the years he has coached them.

“This is a great class. They love each other, work hard and are good both ethically and morally,” said Shipley.  “These are good kids to coach, they have led the team from 1-3 in the beginning of the season to the playoffs.  I’m really proud of this senior class and how they have overcome some things.”

Shipley explained that other games they will face in the playoffs will be very difficult as these opponents have a combined record of 39-1.  He stated that the Lions have had 4 losses to 4 very good ball clubs, 3 of which were undefeated.

Shipley stated that beating Glen Rose next week will take the team’s best effort.  He encouraged Lions fans to come to the game in Stephenville next Friday at 7:30pm to support the team in the first round of the playoffs.

“Our fans make a difference at a game.  I’d love to have a great crowd at Stephenville to support these kids,” Shipley said.
