Springtown

The Brownwood Lions defeated the Springtown Porcupines 30-7 Friday night on the road with a memorable second half performance.   The Lions were able to keep Springtown scoreless in the second half and outscore them with 27 unanswered points.

Brownwood High School Head Football Coach Chuck Howard stated that the team was ready to take on the Porcupines after a good week of practice and mental preparation.  This first ever matchup between the two teams was a very fast paced, hard fought game.

“I want to see the team improving on a weekly basis, in effort, execution on both offense and defense, and eliminating penalties,” said Howard going into the game and knowing that Springfield was a team that plays hard and had many players that were running threats.

Although Springtown got the first score of the game, which would also be their only touchdown, the Lions managed to get a field goal before the half.  During halftime the team regrouped and came out very strong in the third quarter.

“You win football games on the front lines of both sides of the ball,” said Howard before the game, and that is just what the Lions focused on in the second half.  Defense had a very strong game and offense was able to execute some great plays.

“We made some adjustments at the half and started executing well,” said Howard.  “I’m proud of our kids; they are playing extremely hard and becoming opportunistic.”

Howard stated that despite some injuries, the team has learned to play with depth, as starters face injuries, the team has trained to step up to the challenge.

“I’m really proud of them.  They have learned the next man up has to play and play well, that is our expectation,” said Howard.  “They played well, I’m proud of them for stepping in and playing well.”

Brownwood’s district is one of the toughest in the state, with only four district games, three of these opponents are ranked in the top 10 of 4A teams in the state.  Howard explained that the Lions are ready for the challenges ahead.

“We have our work cut out for us (in district play),” Howard stated.  “We’re going to take it like we have done all year, one game at a time.”

The Lions will face Stephenville at 7:30 p.m. next Friday at Gordon Wood Stadium in their first district game.   Howard stated that Stephenville is a great football team with many players that are threats, but that the Lions are preparing for the challenge.

“I guarantee by Friday, we’ll be ready to play,” said Howard.  “There’s a great rivalry between the teams, it’s great for football, for Stephenville and Brownwood.  Both teams are going to come out strong.”

He added that district games have a great meaning and add even more to the game.  To the fans that traveled to Springtown, Howard stated that he was thankful and urged them to continue to support the Lions.

“I’m grateful for the players, proud of the way they are playing and their commitment to our program,” said Howard.
