An emotionally charged game was played Friday night between the Brownwood Lions and Snyder Tigers. Snyder was facing the #1 ranked 3A team in what the Harris Rating Polls called the 3A game of the week. Brownwood Lions came looking for and found their 8th consecutive win of the season.
Scoring drives:
8:13 left in the 1st Quarter, on Brownwood’s first offensive possession of the game, they wasted no time scoring when QB Graylon Brown connected with Jaxon Shipley with a 63 yard touchdown pass. 6-0 was the score when Dillon Ellis was not able to get the extra point.
With less than 5 minutes left in the 1st quarter, Snyder’s QB Ward finished off a 72 yd drive in 11 plays, making the score 6-6.
In the 2nd quarter, with 9:45 on the clock, Brown passes to Shipley in the end zone for a 4 yd touchdown which was the 1st of Brown’s 6 touchdown passes during the game, followed by Ellis kicking the extra point. This brought the score to 13-6.
Following this play, Snyder makes a 46yd return only to suffer a turnover when Vance McShan tips the ball which is scooped up by Derek Longoria. This was the Lions’ 23rd takeaway for the season.
After Shipley makes a leaning catch for a 16 yd gain, Brown is set up to make his 6th rushing TD of the season with a 5 yd carry to the end zone. This brought the score to 20-6 with 7:17 left in the second quarter.
1:26 left in the half, Snyder’s QB Ward gets a 33yd touchdown which brought the score to 20-12.
The Lions answer this with Shipley making a 41yd kickoff return. A 9yd pass to Luke Chastain is caught near the end zone but fumbled and recovered by Shipley who falls on it for the TD. After Ellis makes the extra point, the score was then 27-12.
Brownwood had won the coin toss at the start of the game and selected to have possession after the half. Their first possession in the second half was unproductive, but they held Snyder at their own 20 yard line forcing a punt.
Shipley was set to receive the punt, but tipped it and then picked it up and ran for an amazing 59 yd return for a touchdown. Ellis is good for the extra point and the score was then 34-12.
In the beginning of the 4th quarter, 11:06 left in the game, Brownwood gets a 93 yd drive in 6 plays that ended with a screen play and Levi Perez making a 63 yd TD. The extra point was good and brought the score to 41-12.
Snyder answered this with a drive of 57yds in 8 plays for a TD followed by a 2 point conversion. 41-20 was the score.
Then with 9:40 left in the game, Snyder tries an onside kick, hitting their own man and Brownwood gets possession. Brown connects with Chastain who makes a diving catch for a TD. This made the score to 47-20.
BHS pooches the kick off, Snyder caught it then fumbled, which Tyler Harth recovered at the Snyder 44yd line.
Three quick plays later, Brown connects a pass with Cade Johnson for another TD. Ellis makes another extra point bringing the score to 54-20.
Snyder makes a 41 yd pick up. The next play was a fake then a pass which was intercepted by Kevin Vacarro at the 45yd line. This set up for a 26 yd TD by Ellis who also got the extra point, making the final score 61-20.
Brownwood had a total of 544 yards on offense with 173 on the ground and 371 in the air.
Brownwood Lions continue their season with 8-0 and district play of 2-0. Their next game is at home against Sweetwater October 29th after an open week the 22nd.
