The Brownwood Lions win two in a row with a big win at their first away game of the season against the La Vega Pirates.
The Brownwood Lions scored early in the first quarter with a successful field goal kick by #12 Dillon Ellis giving Brownwood the only points in the first quarter.
La Vega ran the ball hard in the first half scoring a touchdown in the second quarter, but Brownwood was ready to answer those points. As the second quarter wound down, #2 Graylon Brown connected a short pass to #38 Stehl Ratliff for a touchdown. The extra point was no good.
As La Vega’s tried to move the ball down the field on their next possession, they fumbled the ball and gave control back to the Lions. #2 Graylon Brown made a run up the middle for another touchdown. The extra point kick was blocked closing out the first half with Brownwood in the lead 15-7.
Brownwood’s defense did not let up and kept La Vega away from the end zone for the rest of the game.
In the start of the 3rd quarter, La Vega was dominated by Brownwood’s defense resulting in a safety. Brownwood’s offense had some trouble getting down field for the remainder of the 3rd quarter, but the defense kept La Vega’s passing game in check.
#38 Stehil Ratliff scored another touchdown at the beginning minutes of the 4th quarter and the Lions made their first extra point of the night as well.
The game came to a close with Brownwood beating La Vega 24-7
The players and coaches for Brownwood were visibly excited about the win taking them to 2-0 record for the season. Coach Bob Shipley told the players after the game, “The defense are the heroes of the game,” having all of the defensive players stand up and be recognized.
Coach Shipley said, “I don’t have to tell you what next week is.” referring to next Friday’s game against Stephenville. Shipley said that there are still a few things on offense that can be tightened up.
After the win, players for Brownwood were coining the slogan for the game – “We marooned the Pirates!”
