With several record breaking statistics achieved over the 2010 football season, the Brownwood Lions Football Awards Ceremony was full of celebration, memories, awards and scholarships. The 2010 Lions achieved titles of District, Bi-District, Area, Regional, and Quarter Final Championships. They were also State Semi Finalists.
Master of Ceremony Dallas Huston quoted statistics achieved by the 2010 Brownwood Lions football team and stated that this season was better than previous seasons when he had followed the Lions to state championships. (See video below).
Some of these were: Most Points Scored by a Brownwood Lions Team in a Single Season, which was 801 for the year, breaking the previous record by over 300 points; which was also the third highest amount in Texas state history. Previous BHS teams had averaged 40 points per game; however this year’s Lions broke that record by scoring an average of 40 points in the first half of their games.
There were 12 All State Players, 6 of them were chosen for the 1st Team. The Lions were also the 7-On-7 State Champs in 2010.
Scholarships were awarded to the following:
Deborah Ellis Memorial Scholarship: Peyton Christopher. Presenting the Deborah Ellis Memorial Scholarship, in honor of his late wife, was District Court Judge Stephen Ellis.
Chris Hart Memorial Scholarship: Caden Ellis. Presenting the Chris Hart Memorial Scholarship was Brownwood High School Principal Bill Faircloth.
Marion “Choc” Wetzel Memorial: Graylon Brown. Presenting the $5000 Scholarship award was Mr. Hetzel’s family.

Many of the speakers told of what amazing fans the Lions had during the 2010 football season, who followed them on the radio and by internet broadcasts from many areas, including overseas. The most memorable fans for Coach Shipley were the ones that he considers to be friends at the nursing home. His personal mission field is visiting people in the area nursing homes, many of which are dedicated Lions fans, listening to radio broadcasts and then watching the games again on the Saturday broadcasts. A thanks was also offered to Charles Lockwood for helping raise the funding for the broadcasts that so many enjoy. Even Kenny Gillette, the “#1 Brownwood Lions Fan” was recognized for traveling back to Brownwood for the Ceremony from Abilene where he recently relocated.
The 2010 Brownwood Lions’ coaches are Head Coach and Athletic Director Bob Shipley, Jeremy Smith, Chad Coleman, Josh Alcorn, Marvin Wilson, Ty Lang, Brett Lang, Derrick Stacks, and Sam Skidmore. Coach Shipley recognized the coaching staff for being men that parents can entrust their kids to because they are “Godly men”. He also noted that they have a daily impact on the lives of many of these young men’s lives.
An emotional Bob Shipley said a farewell to his senior players starting out with an “I’m sorry we didn’t win that 8th State Title.” He spoke of life not being fair and how he didn’t expect God to use him to teach that hard lesson to the team. Even after sending a game tape in to the Refereeing Association from the Carthage game, he stated he has never blamed a loss on bad calls before; that the referee receiving the tape wrote a letter back which pointed out not one, but four bad calls. Although it cost the Lions the state championship, Shipley very humbly restated that life isn’t always fair and that the players should not let this be the biggest thing that ever happened in their lives. Instead he challenged them to take the way they played this season and apply that tenacity to everything they do in the future and they will be successful.
The evening ended with memories from the senior players, singing of the school song and the 2010 season highlight video.
Seniors told memorable stories that they will never forget. Brownwood Lion senior Derek Longoria wore a Lions helmet and stated, “Although we will all be going to different colleges, wearing different colors, we will always be Brownwood Lions.”
