Written by Ben Cox – Brownwood is known for its hometown feel, and its generous and caring residents. Both of those sentiments were put into practice on Thursday afternoon at Gomez restaurant, as the business was spared from closing its doors for good.
Angie Gomez, who runs the Brownwood icon with her husband Ted, said “We were talking about it and praying over it Sunday.” Debts and rising costs had forced the couple to consider and ultimately decide to close the restaurant that has been in his family for generations.
“We put the signs up yesterday (Thursday) and some guests stopped eating and immediately began praying.”
Gomez says what happened next was simply an act of God.
“They came to us in the back room and said you can’t close, you just can’t.” The guests then handed Gomez enough money to keep the doors open, and the restaurant in business.
Gomez refuses to say who made the contribution to her business, or give any details about any arrangements except to say the people who saved her family’s restaurant were adamant that they not be given any praise. “The glory goes to God,” is what they said, says Gomez. “And it does.”
Serving the community runs deep in the Gomez family, and has been passed down to a new generation. “We were going to serve enchiladas at Project Graduation next week, but it looked like we weren’t going to be able to with the closing. But my grandson said to me that even if we were to close, he would come help us make the enchiladas anyway.”
For those who don’t know, Gomez is located at 716 W. Commerce Street, and is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Tuesday through Saturday, serving breakfast and lunch on Sundays.
Mrs Gomez has requested that she not be asked who blessed her family in such a way, she just wants to thank God for his many blessings.
