Brownwood News – The Brownwood Independent School District will be hosting the 7th Annual Little Lion Olympics for all 3rd graders on April 26th, 2018, and all 4th and 5th graders on April 27th, 2018 at Gordon Wood Stadium.

This event will give approximately 750 students an opportunity to participate in a junior track meet and help prepare them for their athletic career. The track meet will be centered around the “Olympics” and feature events such as the javelin throw, long jump, the strong man tug-of-war, and various running events, including relays.

The opening ceremony will begin with each team carrying their original flag and many other Olympic Opening Ceremony traditions.

This year, the track meet will be honoring all military members, both active duty and veteran. We will include a special ceremony for honorees.

Students will be displaying their military-inspired flags and wearing shirts that honor all branches of the military. We would like to invite all current and retired military members to the track meet.

An event this size requires a great deal of team work and support. All schools, (Coggin Intermediate, Woodland Heights, East, and Northwest Elementaries) have to work closely together to get students and teachers organized.

All PE teachers and principals prepare students for their events and the festivities of the day. The support staff at each school is invaluable for sending out communications to teachers and students.

The S.H.A.C (School Health Advisory Committee) members do a great job at generating ideas to make Little Lion Olympics bigger and better each year. Community support is vital to the event, as well.

We would like to thank our parent volunteers and Jr. High and High School coaches who help make the day of the track meet a success.

Stefenia Phipps, Coggin Intermediate coach and an organizer of the event, said, “The Little Lion Olympics will prepare students to become future athletes, to become involved in activities to stay healthy, to know the importance of teamwork, and to learn about Olympic traditions. The benefits of track and field are endless. The more students we can get excited about track and field at an early age, the more it will benefit all Brownwood programs.”

Please contact Ms. Phipps at Coggin Intermediate (325-646-0462) for questions about the event.
