Various Veterans Day programs and activities were held in Brownwood ISD schools this week to honor the brave men and women who have served in our military.
Special Veterans Day programs were held Tuesday morning at East Elementary, Woodland Heights Elementary, and Northwest Elementary. Coggin Elementary held their program Monday night. Each program highlighted the service of our Nation’s Veterans, and also featured participation and songs performed by students. Veterans that attended each program were honored specifically either by name or by standing to be recognized by those in attendance.
At East Elementary, Principal Nanda Wilbourn read aloud the name of each veteran as they stood and announced which branch of the military they served. Those recognized included Michael Cloy, Jimmy Smothers, Miller King, John Brinley, Michael Cummings, Shirley Stovall, Josh Stovall, Jerry Weatherful, Debbie Daniel, Jane Masters, James Masters, Jonathan Delisle, Keith Clark, Billy Murphy, Chuck Webb, and Cindy Webb.
The program at Woodland Heights Elementary included first grade students introducing each individual branch of the military. Students with parents that are serving or have served in our military were allowed to go stand with them while the song for each respective branch was played. Following the program students posed with those honored for a photo.
The Northwest Elementary program featured Colors being posted by Eagle Scout, John Tobias, 1st Class Scout, Robert Dick, and 1st Class Scout Logan Dick. Tobias, a senior at Brownwood High School who has helped with the Northwest Elementary Veterans Day program for the last four years, also read aloud a Veterans Day poem after giving a brief history of how November 11th became recognized as Veterans Day.
At Coggin Elementary, the Veterans Day program packed the auditorium while 250+ students attended and sang. Roughly 30 veterans attended the event that began with a slideshow tribute to family members of Coggin students and staff who have served in the military. Fourth grade Boy Scouts, Sam See and Andrew Boren presented flags at the close of the program.
On display for Veterans Day at Brownwood Middle School was their Wall of Honor. The display, set up in the windows of the Brownwood Middle School Digital Media Center/Library, consists of information and photos of family members of BMS staff and students that have served or are serving in the military.
Those in the community were also treated to the annual Veterans Day parade. The Brownwood High School band joined with Early, Bangs and May high school bands to march in the parade as it made its way through downtown Brownwood on Saturday.
