Brownwood ISD showed support Monday to four families in the district who are battling cancer by giving them checks from funds raised through this year’s “Pink Out” fundraiser.
Recent BHS retiree Norlene Gleaton, Middle School librarian DaLin Cummings, retired Intermediate School teacher Marla Van Wyck and Northwest Elementary retiree Lou Allen each received a check for $2525.56 as a result of the fundraiser.
The “Pink Out” funds were raised in October with t-shirt sales and various fundraisers during the “Pink Out” week.
Brownwood High School Key Club members Karina Sanchez, Alexis Garcia and Abby Adams presented the checks to the families after a small introduction by BHS Counselor Shelia Senkirik during Monday’s BISD school board meeting. Family members, friends, and students posed for photos with the recipients as they held their oversized checks.
“Last year was our first year and it was a huge success and we are very excited about the funds that were raised, and we raised enough to help a student and a faculty member last year,” said Senkirik.
Senkirik said that this year’s “Pink Out” campaign far surpassed last year’s numbers thanks in part to a $5000 donation from Big Country Ford, and the district is able to help these four people and keep $3000 in the cancer fund in case someone else is diagnosed with cancer so the money will be available.
