Fifth and sixth-grade students from Brownwood Intermediate School filled the bleachers at Gordon Wood Stadium to enjoy their 2013 Flag-Football Super Bowl on Wednesday, October 16th. Sixth-grade teams had played in a tournament of games leading up to the “Super Bowl” event that also included performances of the sixth-grade choir, led by Amber Jones, the 5th and 6th grade cheerleaders, and the BHS Band, led by BHS Band Director, David Lambert.
The “Maroon” team ended up on top, winning over the “White” team in a last minute scoring touchdown by Braden Bushnell. The teams stayed neck and neck for most of the game, with the final score: Maroon Team 34, White Team 30.
The event had all the elements of a traditional football game including signs for the players to “break” through, created by the school’s art department, a functioning scoreboard kept by Jerry Don Gleaton, live announcements from Laura Scantling, an official referee, Robert Howington, and a half-time marching show by the BHS Mighty Maroon Marching Band.
“We couldn’t do things like this for these kids without the teamwork from everybody,” said Brownwood Intermediate School coach, Brandon Brown. “Thanks to the High School Athletic department for letting us use Gordon Wood Stadium, and thanks to everyone who helped.”
