Hairspray is an American musical based on the 1988 John Waters film Hairspray. The songs include 1960’s dance music and “downtown” rhythm and blues.
This Tony Award winning musical is set in early 1960’s Baltimore. Plump, big-haired teenager Tracy Turnblad’s dream is to dance on The Corny Collins Show, a dance show featuring local teenagers. After learning some dance moves from her black friend Seaweed, Tracy wins a spot on the show, becoming a local celebrity overnight and meeting a colorful array of characters in the process. She then launches a campaign to racially integrate the show, which meets with opposition. Undeterred, Tracy fights her uphill battle with the help of her new friends, determined to win.
Brownwood High School invites everyone to come out and join the fun. Questions may be directed to Shannon Lee, Theater Arts Director at Brownwood High School.
