Brownwood High School will present their adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as their fall production which is adapted and written for the stage by theatre arts teacher and director Larry Mathis.

Mathis said in written comments that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has been a show that the students wanted to do for a long time.

“After reading the available published scripts, there was not a script that I felt suited the needs of a large cast and the many things I wanted to do with the show,” Mathis said. “So for the second time, I set out to write my own script.”

Mathis also adapted the script to James and the Giant Peach in 2007.

Although this version closely follows the book by Roald Dahl, it does feature elements from both movie versions as well as its own unique elements.

“The play more closely follows the Dahl book than did the movies and is pushed along by the ‘Storyteller,’ Mathis said.  “There is one ‘significant’ twist in the play that was in neither the movie nor suggested in the book.”

The production of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory opens on Halloween night and will give everyone who attends a great treat.  Performances will take place at Brownwood High School’s Dorothy McIntosh Fine Arts Center and will begin at 7pm on the following nights:

  • October 31
  • November 1
  • November 3
  • November 5

Tickets cost $5 for adults, $3 for students and will be available at the door.  Doors open at 6:15pm each performance night.
