The Brownwood Girls Softball Association kicked off their 2013 season on Thursday with an opening ceremony introducing 31 teams at the Bert V. Massey Sports Complex.

According to association president Albert Gomez, who has been involved with the association for 12 years, this year is a significant showing a spike of growth in girls’ softball in this area.

“This year increased from an average of 19-20 teams per season to 31 this year,” said Gomez.  “This shows that the interest in softball here is getting bigger.”

Gomez introduced each team from 6U to 14 U, along with their coaches.  Approximately 375 girls ages 4-15 are involved in the association this season.

The season was scheduled to start Thursday night; however recent rains made fields too wet and games were cancelled.  These cancelled games will be rescheduled later in the season according to Gomez.  He stated that teams will begin playing Friday with games at 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM.

Typically each team will play about 12-16 games depending on age groupings over the 7 ½ week season according to Gomez.  More information about the Brownwood Girls Softball Association along with schedules of each team can be found on the association’s website by clicking here.

Gomez stated that the association appreciates the City of Brownwood continuing to add to the sports complex.  This year additional parking along with planting of trees between fields has added to the complex’s functionality and appeal.
