A second half comeback fueled by some good execution and capitalizing on Sweetwater mistakes secured a Brownwood Lions victory Friday night 35-30 in the Mustang Bowl. Braxton Kilgo led the Lions with four touchdowns and had a solid running game.
Sweetwater had a fast offense which the Lions had problems stopping at times, but penalties and turnovers gave the Lions opportunity. The Lions were down 7-12 at halftime, but they took these opportunities and turned them into points on the board. Brownwood found confidence and things started going good in the second half of the game.
“We still have a way to go, but our defense played really well,” said Brownwood Lions Head Coach Chuck Howard. “I’m just proud of how our kids played, they really fought.”
Howard went on to state that some of the team were limping from injuries and some were wearing knee braces and such, but that they continued to give their best effort in order to win this game. They faced a lot of adversity but never gave up.
Howard stated that the team came into the game with their minds focused on winning.
“We came into the game knowing we had to put pressure on their receivers. In the second half, we got a big interception by Seth Hardy, which was huge,” explained Howard. “In the end, our kids found a way to get it done. I’m really proud of them.”
It was a must win game to help give the Lions the confidence they needed before facing strong opponents as they head into district play.
“It’s huge mentally (winning the game). We needed a win, a boost for our kids,” said Howard.
He stated that it will be good having the win under their belt and an open week to get some of the players healed up and start preparing for some tough district match ups.
Howard encouraged the fans to continue supporting the team.
“I want to thank the fans for showing support. These kids are working their tails off, they deserve your support. Keep the faith in our kids; we are looking forward to healing up and facing Burnet in two weeks.” Howard said.
The Lions go to a 2-3 record on the season and will have an open week next Friday before facing Burnet on October 11th in the first district game of the season.
