Brownwood News – With spring just around the corner, gardeners are anticipating the last freeze of winter, before planting or transplanting their warm season vegetables. Gardeners who use the same plot, patch, or raised beds, year after year, may encounter persistent pest or disease problems.
Early spring is the perfect time to review these potential problems, and some simple, organic techniques for prevention and treatment. The Brownwood Area Community Garden will offer a short Troubleshooting Class on Tuesday, March 20th, at 5 p.m., and again on Saturday, March 24th, at 11 a.m. The same material will be covered in both sessions, which will take place in the Garden’s shade arbor. In case of bad weather, class will be in the Experience Works office, on Dublin Street adjacent to the Garden.
Class topics will include tomato diseases, root knot nematodes, crop rotation, and soil preparation.
“Each of these topics could be a class in itself,” according to Garden Coordinator Daniel Graham, “but we want to give our Community Gardeners and the general public an overview, in light of our experiences here at the Community Garden.”
The class is free to those leasing space at the Garden, and $5 for the public. RSVP is requested from those planning to attend, to the Garden’s Facebook page, by email to bac_garden@yahoo.com, or to 325-641-9029.
Class participants may also apply to lease space at the Garden, or stay after the class for a Garden tour. The Garden is located at 1514 Dublin Street inside the Brownwood Housing Authority Park Homes, and behind the CTO/Experience Works office building.
