Brownwood News – The Brownwood Area Community Garden is in need of funds to continue its work as both an educational resource as well as a produce contributor for the Salvation Army Loaves and Fishes free lunch program. From September 21st through October 2nd, patrons can participate in the Brownwood Area Community Garden Challenge.
“The Brownwood Area Community Garden is running on empty financially but we are not going to give up,” said Cary Perrin in a recent email. “We have been lucky enough to receive a dollar per dollar challenge. For every $1.00 donated, it will be matched by a dollar up to $1,000.”
An anonymous patron of the garden has promised to match donations, hoping to encourage support within the community.
The Brownwood Area Community Garden was established in 2010. The garden spans 22,000 square feet and features 64 raised beds, 34 of which are used to grow produce to donate to the local soup kitchen program.
The remaining 30 beds are leased out for community members to grow food for their families. The garden has a part-time coordinator, and often hosts educational events. The garden is also a host agency for the Experience Works Program.
From their website: The Brownwood Area Community Garden is established primarily for the purpose of providing fresh, naturally grown produce to area food pantries to feed the hungry. The Garden’s secondary purpose is to provide space for residents who wish to garden according to natural methods, to provide a venue for education on sustainable gardening practices, and to provide employment and on-the-job training opportunities for low-income workers.
The Brownwood Area Community Garden is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductible. The garden is always in need of both volunteers as well as funding.
