BROWNWOOD ART ASSOCIATION PHOTO GROUP PREPARING FOR SEVENTH ANNUAL MEMBERS’ EXHIBIT: CHURCHES OF TEXAS

Brownwood News – The Brownwood Art Association Photo Group is in the final stages of preparation for the Seventh Annual Members Exhibit.  The exhibit will be open and free to the general public October 5th through 28th, at the Art Center, 215 Fisk Avenue. Hours to be announced.

The Brownwood Art Association will host an opening reception of the exhibit as part of the ongoing First Thursday Event, October 4th, at the Art Center from 5 to 8 p.m.  In addition to displaying the photographers artwork, the Photo Group will be announcing the Photographer of the Year.  There will be an opportunity for all to vote for their favorite image for Peoples Choice Award, and all photographs will be availabe for purchase.  This year the Photo Group will be honoring the Late Fred Spencer, as the BAAPG Honorary Photographer of the Year, with a limited selection of his photographs, courtesy of his family.

The Annual Photographer of the Year is selected from 12 monthly winners and some 200 plus submitted photos. The monthly winner and the Photographer of the Year are voted on and chosen by the members of the Photo Group by secret ballot.  The winner will receive an engraved crystal award and a one year membership in the Brownwood Art Association.  This year Jim Blake was selected as the BAAPG Photographer of the Year 2018.

Entertainment will be provided by Abe Cooper and Common Grounds will be catering the event.

The exhibit will feature between 15 and 20 members of the Photo Group and will have more than 100 fine art photographs.  The theme of this year’s exhibit is “Churches of Texas.” Exterior and interior photos of local Brownwood churches and from around the State of Texas will be on display.

Sponsors of this event are: Exxon Mobil, ASAP Creative Arts, Brownwood Bulletin, Brownwood News, Brownwood Art Association and the Arts Council of Brownwood.

The Brownwood Art Association Photo Group is an informal organization consisting of members interested in the art of photography and to promoting the visual arts in our community.  Membership is open to anyone having an interest in photography or just wanting to learn more about photography.  There are no dues or any special requirement to join the group.  All that is necessary is to attend a meeting and provide some contact information to become a member.

Several years ago a mentoring program was started to aid those wanting basic instructions on operating cameras and learning various software programs. In addition to the mentoring program, the Photo Group has monthly competitions, annual exhibit, participates in the Stars of Texas Juried Art Exhibit (Digital Photo Shootout and Free Family Portraits for Family Services), and participates in several photo excursions throughout the year.

Monthly meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at the Art Center, 215 Fisk Ave, at 6PM.  There’s usually a short business meeting to discuss plans and/or upcoming events, a showing of photographs for the monthly competition of selecting a “Photographer of the Year” and open discussions/critiques.
