On Thursday, December 6th, fourth grade students from Coggin Elementary and fifth grade students from Brownwood Intermediate School competed in the 2012-2013 UIL District Meet at Kline Whitis Elementary School in Lampasas.
The competition covered a wide range of subjects including Oral Reading, Ready Writing, Dictionary, Music Memory, Spelling, Chess Puzzling, Number Sense, Social Studies, and more.
Eight fifth grade students from Brownwood Intermediate School placed in their events: Emma Norz (1st place – Dictionary), Abigail Burks (1st place – Music Memory), Sierra Fleet (2nd place – Spelling), Kyler Judkins (2nd place – Chess Puzzling), Clark DelaTorre (3rd place – Chess Puzzling), Hannah Bessent (4th place – Social Studies), and Ariawana Burt (6th place – Music Memory).
“This was the first time for many of these students to compete in a meet like this,” said Brownwood Intermediate School principal, Charles Chesser, adding that they have practiced once or twice a week after school depending on the category. “We have teachers that coach the students in the different categories to prepare them. We’re really proud of all the students and it was a learning experience for everyone involved.”
Ten fourth grade students at Coggin Elementary placed in their categories at the meet, with two earning Best Alternate: Trevor Bowers (1st place – Spelling), Diego Lopez (2nd place – Spelling), Tanner Roberts (3rd place – Number Sense), Emily Haynes (3rd place – Chess Puzzling), Isiah Stanke (3rd place – Ready Writing), Elbijana Thaqi (4th place – Oral Reading), Lora Briley (4th place – Number Sense), Becca Church (5th place – Music Memory), Zachary Porter (5th place – Spelling), Parker Lowe (Best Alternate – Number Sense), and Ariana Buitron (Best Alternate – Spelling).
Other schools that competed at the meet included Kline Whitis Elementary, Taylor Creek Elementary, Hanna Springs Elementary, Gatesville Intermediate and Gatesville Elementary.
Brownwood Intermediate School and Brownwood Middle School will be sending 6th, 7th, and 8th grade UIL students to a meet January 22nd and 26th in Gatesville.
