Written by Ben Cox – The Brown County Republican Women’s Club, during their December meeting on Wednesday, took time to put together “Blessing Bags” to be handed out by local law enforcement.

Organization president Amy Seymour said “We decided to do a community service project, for our Caring for America” Committee. Law Enforcement officers will pick up these bags and they will pass them out to Brown County residents who need something a little extra.”

The bags are simple plastic bags that zip shut, and are filled with “oatmeal, jerky, peanuts, hot coca and different stuff for those who need a little snack or pick-me-up” according to Seymour.

Brown County Sheriff Vance Hill said “We’re gonna be giving these to children. Maybe we roll up to a domestic situation, we can give these to the kids to show that we care and are thinking about them. We’d really like to thank the Republican Women’s Club for putting these together for us.”

Brownwood Police Chief Terry Nichols said “It’s a great opportunity to engage with the community, especially the children this time of year and to show that law enforcement is there to help therm. It’s a little token of kindness that we can show them, and we are very appreciative for these.”

Candyce Speidel, District Representative for Texas Senator Dawn Buckingham, spoke at the meeting and also helped pack the bags for the donation. She said that participating in this kind of exercise ties into what the Congresswoman is trying to accomplish in getting in touch with residents of her district. “We want to make certain that our constituents are engaged in the process down at the capitol.”

Speidel said that new ideas are forming in the Congresswomans office on ways to accomplish that, as well. “We came up with an idea to host coffee’s and community conversations. We’re all stake holders in this, I want to make sure that we are listening and we are involved in the communities we are responsible for.”

The group can be reached through email, or it’s Facebook page, which also has details on meeting times.
