The Brown County Commissioners Court signed a proclamation on Monday to designate April 2010 as Child Abuse Prevention Month. Members of the local Child Welfare Board and CASA were on hand in Commissioners Court for the proclamation.
Kitty Cavanaugh from the Child Welfare Board told Commissioners that the assistance of several organizations and the work of countless volunteers help get the work of protecting children accomplished in Brown County.
The proclamation signed by Commissioners also designates Wednesday, April 7th as “Go Blue Day” where everyone is encouraged to wear a blue shirt, dress, tie, or ribbon to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect.
The County proclamation reads as follows:
WHEREAS: Nearly 200,000 children in Texas are reported as abused or neglected every year; and
WHEREAS: Child abuse prevention is a community responsibility and finding solutions depends on involvement among all people; and
WHEREAS: Communities must make every effort to promote programs that benefit children and their families; and
WHEREAS: Effective child abuse prevention programs succeed because of partnerships among agencies, schools, religious organizations, law enforcement agencies, and the business community; and
WHEREAS: Everyone in the community should become more aware of child abuse prevention and consider helping parents raise their children in a safe, nurturing environment; and
NOW, THEREFORE, we, the County Commissioners Court of Brown County, Texas, by virtue of the authority vested in this court, do hereby proclaim the month of April, 2010, as Child Abuse Prevention Month in Brown County, and in so doing, urge all citizens to work together to help reduce child abuse and neglect significantly in years to come. We also proclaim April 7, 2010 as GO BLUE DAY and encourage all to wear a blue shirt, dress, tie, or ribbon to raise awareness about child abuse and neglect.
