DISTRICT 7 4-H ROUNDUP

District 7 4-H Roundup is on Saturday May 3rd at the West Texas Training Center in San Angelo. It will consist of many events that Brown County 4-Hers can compete in; such as public speaking, fashion show, Share – the – Fun, and educational presentations. If you are participating in District RoundUp and need help critiquing your project contact Nick Gonzales or Kim Milesbefore the date of the contest.

4-H PAPER CLOVER FUNDRAISER AT TRACTOR SUPPLY: APRIL 23RD – MAY 4TH!!

Customers at our local Tractor Supply can support Brown County 4-H by purchasing paper clovers at checkout. All funds raised will be donated to 4-H, and over 70% will remain in Brown County.

Our local Tractor Supply Co. has been one of the top money raisers in this region since the Paper Clover fundraiser started; so let’s help them become number one in the state, while supporting Brown County 4-H at the same time during this fundraiser.

4-H members, if you would like to volunteer to help advertise this at our local TSC store, we will have a booth set up on Friday April 25th from 4:00p.m. – 7:00p.m. If you’re interested please sign up with the extension office.

BROWN COUNTY FAIR CHECKS

The checks for the Brown County Youth Fair will be available for you to pick up at the Brown County Extension Office.  A thank you letter should be written to each buyer who contributed towards your project. Make sure that it is stamped and addressed and turned in to the Extension Office! You will not receive your check until we receive your thank you letters. Hand written “thank you” letters are best but, depending on your personality and penmanship a typed letter can also be appropriate. Thank each person individually, don’t try and thank a group of people in one letter. Checks are only valid for 90 days after the issue date.

MAJOR STOCK SHOW CHECKS

We have received truck and placing checks from Fort Worth Stock Show and only truck checks from San Antonio and Austin Stock Show. If you participated in these major stock shows and placed in your class or put your animal on the truck please come by the office to pick up your check. SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE FROM BROWN COUNTY FARM BUREAU

Graduating seniors in Brown County now have the opportunity to apply for a college scholarship through Brown County Farm Bureau. May 31, 2014 is the deadline to apply. The scholarship will total $1,000, $500 for each semesters for one school year provided the student maintains grades. Students or their family must be new or current Brown County Farm Bureau members. Applications can be picked up at the Brown County Farm Bureau Office located on HWY 377 South in Brownwood.

STATE 4-H CONGRESS

Texas 4-H Congress is a four-day mock legislative experience for 4-H members ages 15 (at the time of the event) to 18. During this time, the 4-H members assume the roles of senators, representatives, lobbyists, press corps, and special interest groups to gain a first-hand understanding of how the legislative process works.

Texas 4-H Congress is a premiere leadership program that is co-planned and co-implemented by the Texas 4-H and Youth Development Office and the Texas 4-H Council.

The 2014 Texas 4-H Congress will be held in Austin. The headquarters for Texas 4-H Congress will be at the Sheraton Hotel, 707 East 11th Street, Austin, Texas 78701.

Below is a list of all the camps that will be held at the Texas 4-H Center this summer.

Horizons – Grades 4-8, Dates of Camp June 29th – July 3rd, cost for camp is $280

County Camp 1 – Dates of Camp June 30th – July 2nd, cost for camp is $180

Mission Possible – Dates of Camp July 7th – July 9th, cost for camp is $175

County Camp II– Dates of Camp July 7th – 9th, cost for camp is $180

County Camp III – Dates of Camp July 9th – July 12th, cost for camp is $230

Prime Time I – Grades 5th-8th, Dates of Camp July 20th– July 23rd, cost for camp is $230

Prime Time II – Grades 2nd – 5th, Dates of Camp July 23rd – July 26th, cost for camp is $230

4-H HORSE VALIDATION – MARCH 1st TO MAY 1st

Validation is required for showing at district or state horse shows, and its

purpose is to certify that ownership requirements have been met. The horse MUST be owned solely by the 4-H member, his/her parents (biological or stepparents), brother, sister, grandparents, or legal guardian. Horses under lease to, but not owned by any of the named persons, do NOT qualify. Horses owned in partnership or jointly with any person other than those previously listed do NOT meet ownership requirements. The horse validation process will be completed electronically using the 4-H Connect online management system.

All 4-H members who wish to show at their District Show or the State 4-H Horse Show will be REQUIRED to validate their horse(s) on the 4-H Connect system. Horse validation is completed for EACH HORSE and will cover all 4-H youth members in that family profile. When validating your horse(s) on 4-H Connect, you will select ONLY ONE 4-H youth member to conduct the validation under. Once a horse is validated, validation paid, and you begin registering for the District Horse Show, the validated horse(s) can be moved to the appropriate 4-H member(s) that will be exhibiting the horse in the show.

Validation will be open from March 1st to MAY 1st. Any horse validated before or after this date will NOT be accepted. An illustrated step-by-step instruction guide for families is available for download and reference on both the Texas 4-H website (http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/) and the Texas A&M University Department of Animal Science – Equine Science website (http://animalscience.tamu.edu/academics/equine/state-4h-show/). Validation cost for each horse is $10.00 from March 1st – April 15th. From April 16th – May 1st validation cost for each horse is $20.00. Credit Card will be the only acceptable form of payment. DISTRICT 7 HORSE SHOW

The District 7 Horse Show is scheduled for June 17, 2014. The show will take place at the Nolan County Coliseum. You must have validated a horse in order to participate in the show. Registration opens May 12th on 4-H Connect and deadline to register is May 29th.

WILDLIFE CONSERVATION CAMP

The Texas Chapter of The Wildlife Society’s Wildlife Conservation Camp is designed for high school students who have completed the 9th grade or higher. Hands-on, outdoor activities are led by wildlife professionals from across Texas. Topics will include wildlife and plant identification, wetland and coastal habitats, hunting as a management tool, species diversity, conservation ethics, wildlife capture and census techniques, wildlife tracking, predatory-prey dynamics, white-tailed deer management, fishing, hunter safety, shooting skills and much more.

The camp is held at Welder Wildlife Foundation in Sinton, Texas. The dates for the camp are July 20th-26th, 2014. Cost per student will be $300, which includes meals and housing, but does not include transportation to and from the camp. Applications for the camp may be submitted online at: www.wildlifecamptx.org. Deadline to register for the camp is May 1, 2014. LIVESTOCK JUDGING CAMPS

Texas A&M Livestock Judging Camp

Texas A&M Livestock Judging Camp is designed for 4-H membersinterested in building their knowledge of evaluating market and breeding animals, including beef, swine, sheep, and goats. This camp focuses on selection principles, oral reasons, live market evaluation, and breeding animal performance data. You must be 11-18 years of age to attend the camp. Instructors include Texas A&M faculty and staff, and members of the 2014 livestock judging team.

There will be two camps offered; the dates are June 13th – 15th, 2014 and June 20th – 22nd, 2014. Cost for the camp is $300 per member. Deadline to register for the camp is May 1, 2014.

Kansas State University Judging Camp

A three day, intense judging camp designed for 4-H members (ages 14-18) who are seriously interested in enhancing their livestock judging experience is necessary for this camp. Workouts will be conducted similar to those at a collegiate level. Chris Mullinix, coach of more than 30 national champion teams and KSU Livestock Team Judging Coach, will conduct the training for each camp. The camp will focus primarily on the proper format, terminology and presentation of oral reasons. Camp participants will also be exposed to livestock evaluation skills and incorporating performance records in the decision making process.

Camp is available on a “first come-first serve” basis. Each camp is limited to the first 35 applicants. There will be three camps offered; the dates are June 9-11, June 13-15, and June 17-19.  The cost of the camp is $250 which includes housing, meals and a KSU souvenir.

Texas Tech University Judging Camp

Texas Tech University is offering two Livestock Judging Camps the first camp is set for June 5-7 (ages 14 and up) and the second camp is June 15-17 (ages 9 and up). The cost for the camp is $250. The deadline to register for either camp is May 1, 2014.

HOWARD COLLEGE GOAT AND LAMB CAMP

The 2014 Howard College Goat Showmanship Camp is set for June 15, 16, &17, 2014 and the Lamb Showmanship Camp is set for June 8, 9, & 10, 2014. The charge for the camp is $85.00 per person which includes four meals and a camp tee shirt or cap. Add $20 per goat or lamb provided by Howard College. If possible bring your own goat or lamb for demonstration purposes. Participants must be at least 9 years old or entering the 3rd grade. 4-H ENROLLMENT IS OPEN ON 4-H CONNECT!

The enrollment process for the 2013-2014 4-H yearhas started. All 4-H families, new and returning, are encouraged to log in and enroll in order to become an official 4-H member.

As you begin your enrollment for the year, here are some tips in using 4-H CONNECT:

If you already have a profile DO NOT create another one!

If you lost your email and password call the county office so we can reset it for you.

An active membership will not be granted until the $20.00 participation fee is paid on 4-H   Connect!

You cannot register or participate in an eventuntil your profile is ACTIVE.

When you are doing your re-enrollment for the 2013-2014 4-H Year please make sure you update your address, phone number, and e-mail address.

You can use your Spaghetti Luncheon Fundraiser Voucher to pay your membership dues. To do this you will have to come into the extension office to enroll.

We are updating our e-mail database on November 1st so if you are not enrolled by then you will no longer receive newsletters updates via e-mail. Unless you notify the Extension Office prior to November 1st deadline.

Don’t wait until the last minute to enroll because after October 31st the cost increases to $25!!
