We would like to wish all the Brown County 4-H Moms a Happy Mother’s Day Weekend! The support you give to your 4-Her and other members is truly appreciated. The Brown County 4-H program would not be what it is without the dedication and time you give. Thank you to all the 4-H Moms and have a happy and blessed Mother’s Day.
MANDATORY STATE ROUNDUP PARTICIPATION MEETING MAY 9TH
If you have qualified or planning to participate at State RoundUp there will be a mandatory meeting Monday, May 9, 2016, 5:30p.m. at the Extension Office. A parent must be present at the meeting. We ask that you bring health insurance information, if possible, so that you will be able to fill our health forms that are needed for state roundup participants. We will be discussing cost, contest, travel arrangements, and adult chaperones.
MAJOR STOCK SHOW CHECKS
We have received truck and placing checks from Fort Worth Stock Show, San Angelo Stock Show, Austin Stock Show, Houston and San Antonio Stock Show. If you participated in a major stock show and placed in your class or made the sale please come by the office to pick up your check. If you have any questions please contact Nick Gonzales.
protect your show livestock from rabies
Due to more cases of rabies in the county, and TAHC (Texas Animal Health Commission) predicting cases that can be seen in the near future; we recommend all livestock exhibitors consult a veterinarian about vaccinating your show animals and horses for rabies. RECORDBOOKS
It is that time to start putting your record book together. If you are planning on putting a record book together here is the website to find the forms and other information you may need for your record book. http://texas4-h.tamu.edu/recordbooks/. Record Books will be due to the Extension Office for review on June 16th. If you need assistance with your record book or have any questions contact Nick Gonzales at the Extension Office.
NEW Steer Classification Standards for 2017 Major Shows
Starting in 2017 new steer classification standards will take place at major shows. Several breeds were modified and changed to better serve today’s industry. If you are looking to purchase steers for next year’s major shows please review each of the breed guidelines. Especially note the revisions to Red Angus, Hereford, Polled Hereford, Charolais, Limousin, Simmental, and the additions of the following Cross Color Divisions: Red Cross, Black Cross and Other Cross. Please note the Chianina breed is no longer included in the updated classification standards. A complete list of these breeds can be viewed at: http://brown.agrilife.org/links/4h/. 4-H Clothing & Textiles Project Opportunities:
Spring time involves many 4-H projects to include Clothing & Textiles. The fashion show includes construction and buying divisions. There’s also the Fashion Story Board contest.

DISTRICT 7 4-H HORSE SHOW
The District 7 4-H Horse Show will be held on June 13th & 14th at the John Kuykendall Event Center Llano, Texas. You must validate your horse on 4-H Connect by May 1st in order to participate in the show. Registration opens on 4-H Connect May 9th –23rd. The cost for the Horse Show will be, Regular Qualifying and Open Classes- $7 per entry / Futurity Divisions- $20. For more information contact Nick Gonzales.
LEADERSHIP LAB
Hey 4-Her’s 13 and up! This year’s Leadership Lab will be at Texas 4-H Center June 22nd – June 24th. Registration will open on 4-H Connect May 16th to June 6th. The cost for attendance will be $200 per youth. This expense will cover lunch on the 22nd, all meals on the 23rd, and breakfast and lunch on the 24th. This cost will also cover your room and other lab activities. You must be 13 by the day of Leadership LAB. If you are interested please contact the Extension officer for more details.
DISTRICT 7 COUNCIL OPPORTUNITY
The District 4-H Council provides opportunities for youth involvement in 4-H program development. It is an advisory committee which assists in making plans and executing these plans at the district level.
Their function is:
- to advise the district Extension staff on programs for 4-H youth
- facilitate representation on the Texas 4-H Council
- maintain linkage with county 4-H councils
- assist with the development and implementation of district events and activities
- provide opportunities for 4-H youth to learn democratic principles and procedures
- interpret the 4-H program to the public
AGE REQUIREMENTS – The president, vice president and delegate-at- large must be
16 years of age and not reached their 19th birthday on or before by August 31, 2016. The second vice president, third vice president, secretary, public relations officer and parliamentarian must be 15 years of age and not reached their 18th birthday as of August 31st.
In order to apply for a District 7 Council Officer position you must have served as a Brown County Council Officer. If you are interested in applying for District 7 Council Officer please contact Nick Gonzales so that we can provide you with an application.
4-H MULTI COUNTY CAMP! July 6th – 8th
Brown County 4-H will be attending the Multi County Camp in Brady, TX. This is a great opportunity and it will be a blast!
Date: July 6th – 8th, 2016
Place: Heart of Texas Bible Camp, Brady, TX
Registration Deadline: Tuesday, June 29, 2016 (Only 120 participants, from all the counties, can participate. It will be a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE basis.)
Times: Begins: Wednesday, July 6th at 3:00 pm Ends: Friday, July 8th at 9:00 am
Cost: $50.00 per person, $45.00 per person if more than one per family participates.
Ages: Junior & Intermediate age 4-H members for the 2015-2016 4-H year. Senior Members may attend only as Teen Leaders with Agent approval.

HOWARD COLLEGE GOAT AND LAMB CAMP
The 2015 Howard College Goat Showmanship Camp is set for June 12, 13 & 14, 2016 and the Lamb Showmanship Camp is set for June 5,6, &7, 2016. The charge for the camp is $85.00 per person which includes four meals and a camp tee shirt or cap. Add $50 per goat or lamb provided by Howard College. If possible bring your own goat or lamb for demonstration purposes. Participants must be at least 9 years old or entering the 3rd grade. If you want more information on these camps please contact the Extension Office.
2nd ANNUAL LINDNER FEED SHOWPIG CAMP & SHOW
The 2nd Annual LINDNER FEED Showpig Camp and Show will be June 25-26, 2016 at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Brenham, TX. Registration will be on www.lindnerfeed.com starting April 15th!
The cost for the pig camp will be $50 per exhibitor (includes one entry fee to the show). Deadline for camp registration is June 1st; no late registration will be available for this camp.

K-State Livestock Judging Camps
A three day, intense judging camp designed for 4-H and FFA members ages 14-18 who are seriously interested in enhancing their livestock judging and oral communication skills. Prior livestock judging experience is necessary for this camp. Workouts will be conducted similar to those at a collegiate level. Chris Mullinix, coach of over 30 national championship teams and KSU livestock judging coach, will conduct the training for each camp. The camp will focus primarily on the proper format, terminology, and presentation of oral reasons. Camp participants will also be exposed to livestock evaluation skills and incorporating performance records in the decision making process. If you are interested please look at the June 17-19 camp. As a team we will travel to this camp. The cost for the camp is $250 per camper. The registration deadline is May 23.

Livestock Judging Camp Opportunities

Train Like A Champion Judging Camp – Blinn College

The cost for the camp is $250.00. The deadline to register is July 1, 2016.

4-H ENROLLMENT IS OPEN ON 4-H CONNECT!
The enrollment process for the 2015-2016 4-H year will begin August 15, 2015. All 4-H families, new and returning, are encouraged to log in and enroll in order to become an official 4-H member.
As you begin your enrollment for the year, here are some tips in using 4-H CONNECT:
- If you already have a profile DO NOT create another one!
- If you lost your email and password call the county office so we can reset it for you.
- An active membership will not be granted until the $20.00 participation fee is paid on 4-H Connect!
- You cannot register or participate in an event until your profile is ACTIVE.
- When you are doing your re-enrollment for the 2015-2016 4-H Year please make sure you update your address, phone number, and e-mail address.
- You can use your Fundraiser Voucher to pay your membership dues. To do this you will have to come into the extension office to enroll.
- We are updating our e-mail database on November 1st so if you are not enrolled by then you will no longer receive newsletters updates via e-mail. Unless you notify the Extension Office prior to November 1st deadline.
Don’t wait until the last minute to enroll because after October 31st the cost increases to $25!!
