BRMC’s Healthy Woman program and the Texas AgriLIFE Office are partnering to promote “Walk Across Texas!”
Walk Across Texas! is an eight week program to help people of all ages support one another as they establish the habit of regular physical activity. Walk Across Texas! is recognized as a Best Practice Physical Activity Program by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
Participation is free and open to all area groups, clubs, schools and individuals. Teams and individuals may register online by visiting http://walkacrosstexas.tamu.edu or by calling Chelsea Stevens at 325-646-7410. The final day to register and official kickoff of Walk Across Texas! will be September 19th, during the Brownwood Reunion, at the Healthy Woman Booth.
Why we all need to participate in Walk Across Texas!
Texas ranks 8th in the nation as the most physically inactive state and 15th as the state with the highest adult obesity rates. Chronic diseases account for 70 percent of deaths and 75 percent of U.S. health-care costs each year. With regular physical activity, 58 percent of people with pre-diabetes were able to temporarily or permanently delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. Community-wide programs like Walk Across Texas! have been strongly associated with significant increases in physical activity and bettering the health of Texas communities. Walk Across Texas! had 100 Texas counties that participated in 2008 with a total of 25,689 registered statewide. Of those participants, 50 percent reported feeling decreased stress after walking. Other comments included spending more time with family, increased self-esteem and overall better health.
