J. Fred Perry and Calvin Fryar were honored Tuesday night at the Boy Scout’s 2011 Distinguished Citizens Award Dinner with a full house at the Brownwood Coliseum. Area residents along with city, county, and state officials attended the event to not only recognize the distinguished citizens, but to support the Boy Scouts of America, Texas Trails Council.
Judge Steve Ellis, President of the Texas Trails Council, presented Perry and Fryar with their expected distinguished citizen’s award, but also had a little surprise for the men with the presentation of a another honor.
“The Boy Scouts of America, for the very first time, they have an award that we are going to be able to present, among the first in the United States as a matter of fact, to individuals who are deserving, who are nominated by their local councils and who approve them by the national Boy Scout organization,” Ellis said.
Both Perry and Fryar were presented with this new award, the North Star Award for distinguished service to youth.
Emcee Dr. Don Newbury and several civic leaders in a video presentation used humor and sincerity to describe the honorees as generous supporters to the community and to the Boy Scouts.
