A Canadian man with leukemia got to meet the Texas & former Brownwood resident this past Wednesday who helped save his life with a bone marrow transplant.
Dany Mercado, 26 of Kitchener, Ontario, embraced Dr. Wes Hamilton in Detroit at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Center. The meeting was organized not only for the families to meet, but to help raise awareness for the “Be The Match Registry” program that brought these two men together. Through this registry, Mercado’s doctors were able to find a bone marrow match that would help him in fighting his leukemia. Mercado received marrow from Hamilton at Karmanos in January 2008.
Mercado is a mechanical engineering student at Conestoga College and he refers to Hamilton as his angel.
Hamilton is an emergency room doctor at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene Texas and is a 2001 graduate of Howard Payne University.
