A portion of Brownwood Middle School’s digital media center (library) recently underwent its annual transformation to the “Java Nook” poetry club.  Under the guidance of BMS English teachers, Starla Tedford, Jen Williams, and Brenda Howard, students were treated to the experience of performing poetry in a “poetry café” complete with tables, refreshments, and a stage set up in the corner.

Performances were held on November 7th and 8th, with each student taking their turn on stage to recite their selection.

“Each student had to either write their own poem, or research poetry books and the internet for a poem they preferred to perform,” explained Howard, adding that every student had to write an original introduction for their poem. “This year, we had several students perform original poetry, and raps.”

On Friday, students brought snacks, and the school provided coffee, creamers, hot chocolate, marshmallows and home-made scones made by Mrs. Ann Costa and the Family and Consumer Science classes.

“This is the third year for the Java Nook Poetry Café,” stated Howard. “Students study poetry during the second six-weeks, and we celebrate that by holding the Poetry Café.”
