Brownwood News – The Brownwood Municipal Police Association held their annual Awards Gala at the Brownwood Country Club on Saturday, February 24th. Guest Speaker for the event was Texas Municipal Police Association Deputy Executive Director Mitch Slaymaker. Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce Director Ray Tipton served as the Emcee for the evening. Chaplin Dan Chapman offered the benediction.

 

 

Sponsors for the Awards Gala included Landmark Life, Big Country Ford, and Bruner Auto. Officers and their spouses, civilian employees, select community leaders, and friends of the department enjoyed an evening of dinner and dancing along with recognition of this year’s award recipients.

During the evening, a special presentation was made to the family of fallen Officer Brian Greenrock. On June 14th Officer Greenrock was fatally injured in a two vehicle accident on North US Highway 183 near County Road 334 in Brown County. Officer Greenrock was off-duty at the time.

 

 

Officer Greenrock was born in Brownwood. He attended and graduated from May High School in 1992. Bryan worked as a Jailer for Brown County Sheriff’s Office 10/1996 – 5/1999, the Coleman Police Department as a Reserve 7/1998 – 3/1999 and Police Officer 3/1999 – 12/2002 and 10/2003 – 12/2004, and the Brownwood Police Department since February 2013. He held an Advanced Police Officer License. He was a member of the Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA) and the Brownwood Municipal Police Association (BMPA).

The Trailblazer Award: Retired Lieutenant Tracey Delgado

The Brownwood Municipal Police Association (BMPA) was established in 1957, composed of officers in good standing, employed by the City of Brownwood, for the purpose of perpetuating the memory and spirit of police officers who gave their lives in the pursuit of duty. The BMPA strives for better relationships between police officers and the citizens of the community they serve.

The BMPA Board Members have created an award to honor a member of the police department who exemplifies the mission of the association. The recipient serves the department and the community with the highest standards of excellence and generosity. The award has been named the BMPA Trailblazer Award. Its first recipient, Tracey Delgado, is said to embody the award’s name.

 

 

Delgado began as an officer for the Brownwood Police Department in 1989. She was the fifth female officer to be hired in the department’s history. Eight years later, she became the first female to be promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Several years later she achieved the highest rank of promotion to Lieutenant, once again as the first female in the department’s history.

 

 

In her 27 year career with the Brownwood Police Department, she served in many facets, from foot patrol all the way to Division Supervisor. She is the only female officer to retire from the department.

Other award recipients included:

Officer of the year – Sky Self

This award is given to an officer for outstanding service and or deeds to the department, community and profession. Self was spoken of highly during the award presentation for being dependable and knowledgable in his duties. He reportedly demonstrated great compassion when he observed a juvenile that had no shoes during a service call. Self took the necessary steps to make sure the juvenile was given a pair of shoes.

Civilian employee of the year – Angie Hill

 

 

This award is given to a civilian employee within the department in recognition of their professional sills and outstanding contribution to the department. Hill is said to be professional in all of her duties, going about them without complaint, willing to stop whatever she is doing to assist in additional tasks when needed.

Supervisor of the year – Jesse Mares

 

 

This award recognizes supervisors for their distinguished leadership. Nominees maintain constant commitment to their job performance and lead by example. Mares is said to always maintain a positive attitude, working well with others in the department.

Spartan “Above and Beyond” Award – Noe Acosta

 

 

Recipients of this award are recognized for their warrior ethos of integrity, loyalty, selflessness, and courage. They are disciplined both physically and mentally, and are tactically proficient. Acosta was praised for his unyielding dedication for his fellow officers.
