With most of Brown County frozen under ice and snow the first week of February, many students were able to stay home from school due to hazardous travel conditions and school cancellations.
Brownwood ISD missed three days of school because of the weather, but now students will have to make up at least two of the missed days. The school board unanimously voted Monday night to make April 22nd an instructional day for students which was previously scheduled as a student holiday. The second make-up day for students will be Friday, May 27th which will now be the official last day of the regular school year. Students can expect an early dismissal on these two days.
School officials said that TEA policy states that if more than two instruction days are missed because of weather, health or safety issues, two make-up days are required to be rescheduled and a waiver may be requested for the others.
The school board gave approval for the district to file for a waiver which is expected to be accepted by the TEA.
The Brownwood school board also unanimously approved the school calendar for the 2011-2012 school year. Brownwood ISD Superintendant Reece Blincoe said that the calendar is essentially the same as last year. The one main change noted was that spring break would be one week later than normal to accommodate new testing requirements issued by the state.
