BISD Press Release – The Brownwood ISD (BISD) Board of Trustees met for a regular session meeting on Monday, September 11, 2017, at 6:30 p.m. BISD Board President Michael Cloy called the meeting to order. Reverend Dr. Don Scroggs, pastor of First United Methodist Church, gave the invocation. Coggin Intermediate students Emma Ringer, Olivia Ringer and Trent Loftin led the Pledge of Allegiance.
Board Recognitions:
The Board of Trustees recognized the Distinguished Teachers of the Year, Rising Star Teachers of the Year, and Departmental Employees of the Year from 2016-2017, including: Angela Lindgren and Lana Heers (BHS), Jennifer Lynn (BAHS), Guadalupe Vazquez (BMS), Leslie Swanson Anaya and Erika Finch (BIS), Carene Baslee and Sherri Land (Coggin), Sara Bernal and Shauntel McGlothin (Northwest), Stephanie Brownlee and Chelsea Garcia (East), Kathy Blake and Hannah Darden (Woodland Heights), Natasha Gill (Special Education), Robert Sanders (Maintenance), Mike Miller (Transportation), Hermenia Paredez (Custodial Services), Anne Vedrode (Food Services) and Graciela Hernandez (Volunteer of the Year).

Members of the Maintenance Department were recognized for their dedication and support of the campus consolidation project for the Coggin Elementary and Brownwood Intermediate schools during this past summer, with Board President Michael Cloy expressing the Board of Trustees’ appreciation for the work in facilitating the consolidation undertaken by the department.

State 4A Individual Golf Champion and Brownwood High School Junior Jaryn Pruitt was recognized for his achievement at the 2016-2017 State Golf Tournament. Mr. Pruitt won the 4A Championship with by 5-stroke margin.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Dr. Young presented a brief report including an update on the first weeks of the 2017-2018 school year, staffing report and monthly financial reports.
DISCUSSION & ACTION ITEMS
DEPARTMENTAL REPORTS:
Summer School Programs Report – Dr. Young and Ms. Liesa Land presented a report on the 2017 Summer School Program. Activities and programs for students and staff were conducted throughout the summer months, highlighting students in Pre-K and Kindergarten ESL classes, 5th and 8th grade students and High School students. The superintendents reported that Credit Recovery and End of Course classes were well attended during these months.
Enrollment and Transfer Report – Dr. Young presented a report detailing current enrollment numbers for the 2017-2018 school year, as well as data detailing transfers into BISD from neighboring districts and elementary transfers within the district. Overall, BISD enrollment is down approximately 20 students from the 2016-2017 school year. Elementary transfer requests are fairly evenly split to and from each of the three elementary campuses within the district.
CONSIDERATION OF APPROVAL OF THE CONSENT AGENDA: Dr. Young presented the following items for approval through the consent agenda:
- Fundraiser requests from campuses and student organizations;
- Examinations for Credit;
- Attorney Retainer;
- Minutes from previous meetings
Tim Jacobs moved to approve the Consent Agenda as presented, with Brad Jetton seconding the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.
The Executive Session for the meeting was cancelled due to a lack of need.
