bisdlogo3The Brownwood ISD board of trustees approved renovations to the track at Gordon Wood Stadium Monday night with a cost of more than $200,000.

BISD Deputy Superintendent Kevin Gabaree said with a bump in state funding to the district and increased average daily attendance, BISD will have the funds for the project.  He also noted that the purchase of a new school bus of $100,000, which was included in the current budget, would not be needed this year, and those funds could be allocated to the new track.

The bid was awarded to Paragon Sports Constructors, the company that renovated the Gordon Wood Stadium field recently, and will cost $231,242 for the track which includes renovation to the pole vault and high jump areas.

“It (the track) has deteriorated to the point where I would not feel comfortable calling teams to come in for the Bluebonnet Relays,” Gabaree said.

District officials recently visited the track in Aledo which is made from similar track material that will be used in this renovation.

The work is slated to begin in early December after the football playoff season has ended.

The approval of the new track was not unanimous, with trustee Eric Evans voting no on the project.

Gabaree said that the current track at the Gordon Wood Stadium is 18 years old.
