The Brownwood ISD Board held a regular meeting which included several positive notes.  The meeting began with awards to all campuses and recognition of visitors which included several students from a consumer science course and a group of Boy Scouts.

Public hearing and discussion on Academic Excellence Indicator System (AEIS) was discussed.  This is a yearly report which includes recognized and exemplary campuses; scores by grade level; district and campus ratings; comparable improvement (against 40 different schools); district and campus proforma; violent/criminal incidences; post secondary school performance (including graduates from 2007 because this was a 2008-2009 report).

The new school calendar was approved, which begins on August 23, 2010 and ends on May 26, 2011 subject to bad weather days.  Winter Break was changed to Christmas Holidays.  Graduation Day will be May 26, 2011.  Student Holidays will be Labor Day, Sept. 6; Thanksgiving Nov. 25, 26; Christmas Holiday Dec. 20-31; Spring Break March 7-11.  Early release days will be December 17, March 18, and May 26.

The lease with the Boys & Girls Club was also discussed.  The current lease has a ten year term, which has been a problem with getting some larger grants.  Not having a long term lease, such as 99 years or ownership of the facility, has made some grants are unobtainable.  Board members discussed such a long term lease would be hard to impose on future board members.  The thought of possible sale of this property was also discussed.  It was noted that all properties owned by the board have to be sold at a reasonable market price, which may hinder the option of the Boys & Girls Club purchasing the building.  Board members noted appreciation for the Boys & Girls Club which provides a much needed service to the community.

Other matters on the agenda were:

  • The board approved designating the Superintendent as an adjunct agriculture faculty member to enable the superintendent to travel as an extra instructor during major show circuits.  Dr. Blincoe continues to hold a teaching certificate in this area.
  • The board also approved the RDSPD Shared Service Agreement
  • Discussion of naming BISD facilities including the East Elementary Playground “Mr. Cox’s Playground”, and either the BISD building or the BISD board room in honor of Dr. Don Martin.
