bisdlogo4The Brownwood ISD school board adopted the 2013-2014 school calendar at their board meeting Monday night.  The calendar came to the board after being recommended for adoption by the district’s Education Improvement Council (EIC).

The calendar calls for the first day of school on August 26th 2013 and the last day on May 30th, 2014.  The calendar also calls for two days off at Thanksgiving, a full two weeks off during the Christmas holiday, and a week off during spring break.  Single student and staff holidays also include Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Good Friday, and Memorial Day.

Brownwood ISD Superintendent Reece Blincoe also presented the board with what he called a “dream calendar” which would give the district more flexibility in the school year if the Texas legislature passes a law to allow school districts to set their own school year start date instead of requiring it to be the fourth Monday in August.

The “dream calendar” had the school year starting three days earlier with additional days off for Thanksgiving and Labor Day.  The school year would also end one day earlier.  Blincoe said that there is a 50/50 chance that the legislature could change the school start date law this legislative session.

“We don’t have to adopt the “dream calendar,” but we are ready if the law changes,” Blincoe said.

The school board unanimously adopted the proposed calendar, but indicated that they are willing to switch to the “dream calendar” if the law does change to allow it.
