Billy Wood Johnson went to be with our Lord and Savior on September 21, 2013. Born February 23, 1926 to John Wood and Linnie Cornelius Johnson in Brownwood, Texas. Bill grew up in Brownwood and attended Brownwood public schools through graduation in 1944. He then joined the Navy and served as a cook on the USS Harris in the Pacific during World War II. After the war, Bill returned home and enrolled in Howard Payne College. He married Hallie Marion Early on June 20, 1947. Bill earned a Bachelor’s Degree and a Masters Degree in Education. After college, Bill and Hallie moved often to new teaching opportunities. Bill was an educator and school administrator in public schools across Texas throughout his career. He was respected and admired by peers, teachers and students alike. Bill was active in the Baptist Church serving as a deacon. He was civic minded by his years of service and support in the Lions Club. After retiring, Bill and Hallie moved to San Angelo to be near family. They both served as volunteers at Shannon Medical Center for many years. Glen Meadows Baptist Church became Bill’s last church home. It was there he joined a group of other retired men in their love of fellowship and dominoes. The weekly domino games were a highlight for Bill in the last years of his life. Bill and Hallie enjoyed staying in touch with family and friends and spending their days together. If you saw Bill out and about he would be wearing his favorite cap proudly acknowledging his service to our country as a World War II Veteran.
