Billy Joe “Buck” Buchanan, 77, of Brownwood, died Aug. 4, 2012.

He was born Jan. 24, 1935, in Bradshaw, Texas, to Joe and Bessie Buchanan. He has lived, farmed and fished in Winters,Van Horn, Fort Stockton, Brownwood and in Oklahoma. He graduated from Winters High School in 1953, and began Texas Tech on a football scholarship, which he later transferred to basketball. He served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958. He was married to Barbara Branham of Winters, in Carlsbad, N.M., on Dec. 29, 1956. He was a member of the Mid-Town Baptist Church in Brownwood.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Buchanan of Brownwood; two sons, Cy Buchanan of Tyler, and Josh Buchanan and wife Shirley of Carlsbad, N.M.; two brothers, Doyle Buchanan of Tuscola, and Don Buchanan of Chevy Chase, Md.; three grandchildren, Brittany, Tiffany and Kelsie; and one great-grandchild, Autumn. He is also survived by his constant companion Buttons.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Roy.

Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at the First Baptist Church in Winters, with Dallas Huston and Joey Wilburn officiating. Burial will be in Bradshaw cemetery under the direction of Winters Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the funeral home.
