The PASS Program got underway with their first event, “Operation Clean Sweep” on Friday and Saturday helping neighboring residents of the Coggin Elementary and Brownwood Intermediate School Campuses get rid of unwanted trash and debris at no cost.

Residents had a hand not only from BISD and City of Brownwood staff, but also from Brownwood school children from the Brownwood Intermediate and Brownwood High School Campuses.  Health Occupations Students of America and the BHS Key Club volunteered helped by cleaning up two lots while BIS students helped pick up litter around the school campuses.  In addition, there were outdoor improvement projects going on at Coggin Elementary and Brownwood Intermediate School by school staff and parents.

There was no charge to get rid of household trash, scrap metal or tires.  Curb-side pickup of appliances and heavy items was also available.  Staff was on hand to direct and answer questions.

“Today as anticipated was an extremely busy day with outstanding participation from the area residents,” stated Tim Murray, Development Services for the City of Brownwood.  “At times the traffic was backed up waiting to unload due to dumpsters filling faster than we could haul off and return.”

“Operation Clean Sweep” is just one step in the City’s and BISD’s Pride for Areas Surrounding School (PASS) program.

The two day cleanup event ended with the following results:

  • 11 Full 30 yard dumpsters of trash and debris (330 cubic yards)
  • 548 Total scrap tires
  • 2 Full crane truck loads of debris
  • ¾ of a 30 yard dumpster load of scrap metal
