5:00pm Update: Texas Department of Public Safety released the following updated information.

At approximately 11:30 a.m. today, Marcus Wade Madison, 42, was arrested on a warrant for Attempted Capital Murder. Madison had what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the face, and was transported to a hospital. No one else was located at the residence. A search warrant has also been obtained for the residence, and the investigation is ongoing.

On Wednesday evening, Reagan County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh Mitchell was following up on a complaint regarding Marcus Wade Madison in Big Lake, Texas. During the contact with Madison, Deputy Mitchell was shot, and later died.

Madison barricaded himself in a residence all night and into the morning. Several houses nearby were evacuated as a safety precaution.  Law enforcement officials from around the area assisted and supported the Reagan County Sheriff’s Office on the scene until Madison was ultimately apprehended.

Agencies that assisted in this incident included the Midland Police Department, Midland County Sheriff’s Office, Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office, Howard County Sheriff’s Office, Irion County Sheriff’s Office, Sutton County Sheriff’s Office, Upton County Sheriff’s Office, Sterling County Sheriff’s Office, Glasscock County Sheriff’s Office, Crockett County Sheriff’s Office, Schleicher County Sheriff’s Office the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Aircraft, DPS Texas Highway Patrol, DPS Special Response Team, DPS SWAT, DPS Criminal Investigations Division, Howard County District Attorney’s Office, U.S. Marshall Service, Reagan County Fire Department and EMS, and the American Red Cross, as well as others.

The Texas Rangers are conducting a search of the residence and are leading the capital murder investigation. No additional information is available at this time.

3:00pm Update: Brown County Sheriff’s Office confirms identity of alleged shooter as Marcus Wade Madison.

Madison was charged on July 7, 2012 with (1) Assault with Injury – Family Violence (2) Resisting Arrest (3) Retaliation or Obstruction.  According to BCSO, Madison was released on bond from Brown County Jail on July 14, 2012.

Original Article: According to http://www.newswest9.com, the suspect accused of killing Deputy Josh Mitchell in a standoff with law enforcement in Big Lake, Texas has been identified as 42-year-old Marcus Wade Madison.  The standoff ended on Thursday, and the suspect is reported to have been taken to the hospital for treatment.

Brown County jail records and Brown County Sheriff’s reports indicate that Madison is a resident of Lake Brownwood and that he has a history with Brown County law enforcement. Madison was arrested by Brown County deputies less than a month ago, according to reports.  Madison was charged at that time with Assault Family Violence with Injury and while being placed under arrest, Madison resisted and continued to fight deputies, even after being taken down, the report states regarding the July 7th incident.  The report states that Madison made threats that he would assault one of the deputies once he got out of jail if he ever saw the deputy again and attempted to kick the windows out of the patrol unit. He was additionally charged with Resisting Arrest and Obstruction/Retaliation at that time.

Officials from Big Lake report that around 6:00pm Wednesday evening, law enforcement was attempting to serve a warrant on a man at a Big Lake residence when Deputy Josh Mitchell of the Reagan County Sheriff’s Office was fatally shot during what then became a standoff with officers.  The man, later identified as Madison, was reported to have barricaded himself in a residence in the 1100 block of Main Street in Big Lake and that several surrounding houses were evacuated for the safety of the residents reports, law enforcement officials said in a statement.
