Those driving around town may have seen billboards saying “Great Changes on the Horizon” regarding Mid-Tex Cellular. There are also banners up at the old Starbucks building telling of Mid-Tex Cellular coming soon to that location. So what exactly is going on?
The Central Texas Telephone Cooperative out of Goldthwaite is now the parent company of Mid-Tex Cellular and also owns West Central Wireless based out of San Angelo, TX. As a result, changes are on the horizon and Mid-Tex Cellular customers should notice many service improvements in the coming months.
The first big change is that Mid-Tex Cellular will be moving its main office to the former Starbucks building near the traffic “T” in Brownwood and will no longer office out of the Texas Communications building on the edge of Early on Hwy 377. Mid-Tex will offer a drive through service for its customers at this location and the building is currently being renovated. General Manager of Mid-Tex Cellular, Mike Higgins said that they hope to be in the new location by October 1st, 2009 so they can operate there through the 4th quarter.
The next big improvement that will be evident is the voice and data quality. Higgins said, “We are totally rebuilding the 35 cell sites. This will improve the coverage for customers in 25 total counties.” These upgrades will allow for higher power capabilities of all cell sites & improve in-building coverage and fewer dropped calls. Mid-Tex’s home area was 6 counties, but the upgrades to 25 counties will go from Stephenville to Garden City, from Fredericksburg to Big Lake, from Ozona to Boerne and all points in between.
With these upgrades & increased data speeds, West Central Wireless & Mid-Tex Cellular will be able to offer BlackBerry phones to customers. They are also providing a prepaid plan called Right Wireless that requires no credit check, no deposit, and no contract.
Existing customers on a contract will be allowed to upgrade their phones before their contract expiration date (up to a year earlier), and change their rate to a new rate without a contract extension.
GM Mike Higgins said that they are planning on having these changes implemented by the 4th quarter of this year. Anyone with questions can call the Mid-Tex Cellular office at 325-646-0972 or toll free at 800-695-0150.
