Brownwood High School Lady Lion basketball player Heaven Walker signed a letter of intent with Concordia University in Austin, Texas.

Walker is the daughter of David and Belinda Walker of Brownwood.

When asked why she chose Concoridia, Walker stated, “I chose Concordia because I really liked their basketball program.  I didn’t want to go to a big school, and the school fit me perfectly.”  She stated she had considered a couple of schools in Louisiana which were all D3, but decided to choose Concordia.

Concorida appealed most to Walker because of the way the team plays.  “I like the way they play team basketball.  That is most important to me,” she explained.

Walker plans to study either sports medicine or sports journalism while at Concordia.

Playing in Brownwood has prepared Walker for college play.

“It has helped me to gain the speed that I need because I was out of shape because I was injured,” Walker explained.  In college play, Walker would like to make it all the way to a championship.

“These two are a huge part of why Brownwood High School, in my opinion, is considered the top athletic school in our district and one of the top athletic schools in the Region,” said Head Girls Coach Don Hood of Walker and her classmate and fellow athlete Ashley Strong who also signed a letter of intent on Wednesday.  “You can go anywhere in the state and people know Brownwood soccer and Brownwood basketball and a lot of it is because of what these two girls have done, the injuries they have pushed through and the work that they have put in.  The determination for their aspirations not to be derailed, is a huge motivation to me as a coach, and I hope to you teammates, as friends and athletes, I hope you see why we preach to never give up.  I don’t know of anybody that has gone through any more than these two have been through with bad ankles and bad knees.  Because of their perseverance, our teams are better today, we even beat a team last night that we have never beaten before in the history of this school.  I don’t know that it would have happened without Heaven Walker being out there,” said Hood.

Coach Heather Hohertz stated that Walker worked hard to overcome injury and looks forward to seeing what she will do in college.

“It’s been a long four years, up and down, you’ve faced some adversity with your injuries. When some people would have given up you played a big and important role this year.  I’m glad you stuck it out,” said Coach Hohertz.  “Concordia is getting a good player, a good kid.  You are going to excel and get better.  I know that you will do great things just because of the adversity you have faced.  I wish you luck.”
