Brownwood High School’s theatre department will be holding a public performance of Peter Pan, Monday, March 25th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Dorothy McIntosh Fine Arts Center auditorium at Brownwood High School.
Not to be confused with the full-length production of Peter Pan that was performed in the fall, this show promises a much different experience, and many hours have been spent adapting it for the upcoming District One-Act Play Contest.
“It is a lot of time, energy, effort and work that these kids put in,” said Brownwood High School theatre teacher, Larry Mathis, at Friday night’s rehearsal. “It is a considerably different show than what you saw in the fall.”
“What is interesting is that it’s the same script,” said Mathis, adding that only three cast members have the same roles and the script has been cut down to less than 40 minutes to meet UIL specifications. “You would not believe it’s even the same script.” Mathis also gave credit to the creative minds of the students which helped develop this version of Peter Pan.
Monday’s performance will give the public a chance to see the show that will compete with five others this coming Wednesday at the District UIL One-Act Play Contest which will be hosted by Brownwood High School.
“It [UIL One-Act-Play Contest] is the largest competition of its kind in the United States,” said Mathis. “There is no other competition that remotely comes close in terms of the number of schools that participate and the kinds of things that happen in one-act play.”
The district contest will host six schools and begins Wednesday, March 27th, with the first show opening at 1:00 p.m. The contest is open to the public with no admission costs. Brownwood High School is scheduled to perform at roughly 6:00 p.m.
Both the district contest and Monday night’s performance will be held in the Dorothy McIntosh Fine Arts Center auditorium at Brownwood High School. Admission for the Monday night performance is free with donations accepted at the door.
