mathisOn Tuesday, February 18th, Brownwood High School theatre teacher, Larry Mathis, was presented with a 2013 UIL Sponsor Excellence Award.  Information regarding the award is described on the UILtexas.org website as follows:

“The University Interscholastic League seeks to highlight the contributions of sponsors of UIL scholastic competition. This award is created to identify and recognize outstanding sponsors who assist students in developing and refining their extracurricular talents to the highest degree possible within the educational system while helping them to keep their personal worth separate from their success or failure in competition.”

In a written statement, Brownwood ISD Superintendent, Dr. Reece Blincoe, praised Mathis, and his work over the years at Brownwood High School. “I cannot imagine that there would be a better example of commitment, leadership, and professionalism than Larry,” stated Blincoe.  “Larry has touched the lives of our entire district, both faculty and students, as well as our community as he announces all home football games and all the pep rallies.  His theatre productions are magnificent – he truly pushes the envelope and provides the students a wonderful opportunity to learn and hone their skills, resulting in great shows for the community to enjoy.  For over 30 years he has overseen Brownwood ISD’s very successful UIL academic programs with enthusiasm and excitement.  Larry is a remarkable teacher and is universally loved by students, faculty, parents and our community.  He is outstanding in his field and very worthy of this honor.”

Mathis, who recently announced his retirement, accepted his award at a ceremony where he was honored for his accomplishments, and will also receive a check for $1000 as part of the award.
