Students from the Brownwood High School advanced welding class recently held a “tailgate party” to test out a grill they custom built as a class project.
The king sized grill was commissioned to be built for Luke Shaffer who is the son of BHS drama teacher Larry Mathis. Shaffer is a chef at 290 Grind, a Coffee Shop and Bistro in Giddings, Texas. Both Shaffer and Mathis are huge UT fans so the grill has the iconic Texas Longhorn symbol. For the tailgate party, Shaffer barbequed baby back ribs and cooked beans and his own special made poblano pepper sausage (pictured below).
Students who constructed the grill include Juan Sanchez, Christian Lentz, Jamie Felan, Juan Sanchez, Matthew Lewis, Andrew Brenham, Matthew Aguirre and Stacy Myers (pictured above with the grill). BHS Ag teacher Denzil Flood stated that the students built the grill from the ground up with the exception of the purchase of a few parts such as the jack, tongue and the tank for the grill.
