Two Brownwood High School Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) students were selected to be HOSA area officers after successfully completing the testing, application, and interview process.
“Starting at the beginning of the school year I had four students that knew they wanted to try for a HOSA area office,” explained BHS teacher and HOSA Advisor, Annalyn Deen. “The process begins with taking an online officer exam.”
BHS HOSA students, Brady Taylor and Journey Buitron passed the officer exam and proceeded to select the offices they were interested in. Brady Taylor chose to run for Area V Secretary, while Journey Buitron sought the office of Area V Vice President.
“These two students proceeded to develop a resume, fill out an application and obtain two letters of recommendation,” explained Deen. “After they mailed these off, they began preparing for the credentialing process.”
Each student was required to prepare a one-minute speech using the current year’s HOSA theme, “The Future Starts Now,” in addition to a three-minute campaign speech. “Along with these speeches they had to study to answer many mandatory questions about HOSA, parliamentary procedure, and why they wanted to be an area officer,” noted Deen.
On Friday, January 17th in Abilene, Texas, Taylor and Buitron were interviewed, along with nine other Area V candidate hopefuls. “After being interviewed they found out that they were being slated for the positions they had applied for and they were running unopposed,” said Deen. “Later that day each student gave their three-minute campaign speech and answered a question on stage in front of the 880 contestants at the local Area V convention.”
Taylor and Buitron are the first Brownwood High School students to become HOSA area officers. “At the closing ceremonies they were sworn in and put immediately to work helping hand out awards at the closing ceremonies,” said Deen. “I could not be more proud of both Journey and Brady. I have seen the work they put in to obtain this success and know they were the best candidates for their positions.”
Deen went on to say how much the students have learned and grown through the process. “I have really enjoyed seeing these two boys grow through this experience,” stated Deen. “I have seen them become leaders, not only in their local chapters, but at Area as well.”
“This next year will be filled with many new tasks for these boys,” noted Deen. “They are both extremely excited and proud to be Brownwood High School’s first HOSA area officers.”
