Brownwood High School was well represented once again by the Mighty Maroon Marching Band as they competed at the 2012 UIL Area D Marching Competition at Lumpkin Stadium in Waxahachie on Saturday.
The competition started late morning and continued through until approximately 11:00pm that night when only 5 out of 28 bands who had received Division 1 ratings at their regional competitions were selected to advance to state. Although Brownwood High School was not among the five, they performed their Beethoven themed show with pride and represented Brownwood with great music and marching skill.
Led by their director David Lambert, drum majors Natalie Mayo and Isabella Avalos, and assistant directors Leslie Lambert and Adam Cartwright, they performed at 12:00pm Saturday. Other 3A schools in the competition included Springtown, West, Columbus, Castleberry, Liberty Hill, Lorena, Gonzales, Llano, Lampasas, Burnet, Smithville, Glen Rose, Taylor, Robinson, Kennedale, Navasota, China Spring, LaGrange, Stephenville, College Station, Giddings, Gatesville, Alvarado, Rockdale, Bellville, Caldwell and Wimberly. Judges were Jeremy Earnhart of Irving ISD, Mike Glaze of Sundown High School, Mark Poole of Forney High School, Jim Rhodes of Forsan High School and Jason Steele of White Oak High School.
After learning that they would not advance to the UIL State Competition at the Alamo Dome in San Antonio, Mr. Lambert encouraged the members of the band with a pep talk before boarding the bus.
“I know you are disappointed, and that’s okay. That’s part of life; you sometimes have disappointments, but let’s take and learn from it. We’ve worked hard, we’ve done our best, we’ve set goals…that’s what you have to do in life, you set goals and work hard every day to meet those goals and I’m proud of you,” said Lambert. “Let’s look forward to sweepstakes, so the seniors can have four years of sweepstakes.”
He thanked the juniors, seniors and section leaders for being great leaders. Members were also reminded that they were champions for making it to the area competition and that they should be proud to have had the dedication of early morning and evening practice, when they could have been sleeping in or taking it easy.
Drum major Natalie Mayo encouraged the band by telling them that most bands that have new directors don’t make it to area competition and that this band has proved that they are continuing the winning tradition of the Mighty Maroon Marching Band. Despite losing several members through graduation and longtime director Richard Graham, it proves that what makes the band great is the band members who continually work hard and continue the winning spirit of the BHS marching band.
Lambert stated that the band should be proud of their marching accomplishment.
“I’m proud of each and every one of you, and you should be too,” said Lambert.
