Brownwood High School held their annual Sports Awards Ceremony Sunday afternoon recognizing student athletes for their hard work and achievements, also giving top honors to seniors Mitch Stephens, Sydnie Darden, and Sara Byrd; recipients of the school’s top honor Pride of the Pride.
Athletic Director and Head Coach Bob Shipley presented the Pride of the Pride award in boys’ sports, and spoke of Stephens’ high school accomplishments and how he came close to breaking the school record in the 300 meter hurdles, which was established in the early 80s.
“Hopefully with a good run at the state meet, he can win a medal and also bring home a new school record,” said Shipley. “That would be a fabulous way for him to cap off just an unbelievable career at Brownwood High School.”
Girls Athletics Head Coach Don Hood explained that his coaching staff had a tough time choosing a Pride of the Pride recipient and unanimously decided the honor should be shared this year between Sydnie Darden and Sara Byrd. He stated that all of the senior girls have been working out even though the season has ended and that they are doing things right, being competitive, and are good role models.
“It’s not just because they are good athletes and it’s not just because they play in multiple sports; it’s just that they represent our school in the best way possible,” Hood said. “I can say that of a lot of the girls, but these two stand out amongst our coaches.”
Many other athletes were recognized and honored for their dedication and work both on and off the field, court or track.
