The Brownwood High School theatre department performed “Jane Eyre” at the District UIL One-Act play competition in Sweetwater on Saturday, March 24th. The performance earned the cast more awards than any of the other shows, and even earned a 1st place rating by the lead judge in the panel.

“They came away with the realization that they had an awfully good show and that the lead judge, who had judged the state meet twice, loved them and ranked them first,” said Larry Mathis, Theatre Director at Brownwood High School.

“Unfortunately, we had a couple of judges that were not quite as experienced and they just didn’t see it that way.”

The show was selected as an alternate, and it will only advance to the area competition if a qualifying school drops out of the contest.

“It was just one of those days, but that’s how it is in one-act play competition,” said Mathis.

Several awards were earned by the cast at the contest, including, Best Actress awarded to Kayla Stewart for her leading role as Jane Eyre and All Star Cast Honorable Mentions, presented to Caitlyn Morris for her rendition of Young Jane Eyre, and Meredith Underwood for her performance as Georgiana Reed.  In addition, Trey Fawcett and Kimberly Boswell made All Star Cast for their respective roles as John Reed and Mrs. Reed.

“At least they came away knowing that someone appreciated very much what they did, and they dominated in the acting awards,” Mathis said. “I am extremely proud of this group. They came to love the show, worked really hard, and just did a phenomenal job.”
