The three pieces of music chosen for each choir must be chosen according to UIL criteria and must be listed on the UIL Prescribed Music List of acceptable choices. Each year, UIL Music commissions sight-reading material to be written for this choral evaluation.

Each choir is given a score, according to the UIL Scoring Rubric, for both Concert and Sight-reading. Possible scores include: 1-Superior, 2-Excellent, 3-Good, 4-Fair, and 5-Poor.

Members of Brownwood High School’s Varsity Women’s Choir competed in the Concert portion of the evaluation with the following repertoire: “Gloria Fanfare” by Farnell “The Cuckoo” by Applebee/Fowler and “Nachtviolen” by Schubert/Porterfield. Varsity Women’s Choir received a Superior Rating in Concert and an Excellent Rating in Sight-reading.

Members of Brownwood High School’s A Cappella choir competed in the Concert portion of the evaluation with the following repertoire: “Alleluia” by Mozart/Leavitt “Je Le Vous Dirae” by Certon/Leavitt and “In Meeting We Are Blessed” by Robertson. A Cappella received a Superior Rating in both Concert and Sight-reading, earning them the coveted Sweepstakes Award.

BHS Choirs received assistance from two (2) area university choral directors, in the form of a pre-UIL clinic, held during class time. Dr. Christopher Rosborough (Howard Payne University) worked with both choirs one day during class, the week prior to UIL, to help polish their performances to be ready for the Concert portion of their evaluation. Dr. Troy Robertson (Tarleton State University) worked specifically with A Cappella on the piece he had composed that they were working on: “In Meeting We Are Blessed.”

Students enjoyed hearing the composer’s perspective on how he’d imagined his piece being performed. BHS Choirs were accompanied by Mrs. Ann Slaymaker, a former BHS A Cappella member, and All-State Choir member. Mr. Jake Shelton, BMS Band Director, also provided percussion for A Cappella on “In Meeting We Are Blessed”. BHS Assistant Choir Director is Ms. Amber Loudon. BHS Choir Director is Mrs. Cindy Franklin.
