Bettie (Bett) Jeane Lightsey Weedon was born in Early, Texas on October 20, 1926 to Bill and Minnie Lightsey. Bett passed from this life on August 6, 2015, at her home at Lake Brownwood, Texas, at the age of 88 years. Bett was predeceased by her parents; her sister, Billie Joyce Templeton; and 2 granddaughters, Julie Elaine Weedon and Anna B. Bunnell.
Bett graduated from Early High School in 1944 and began working at Western Union in Brownwood, Texas. In 1948, Bett met the love of her life, Joe Dan Weedon of Lake Brownwood, Texas; they were married on September 11, 1949. Joe Dan moved Bett to the family ranch where he was involved in raising Polled Herefords and Bett soon became a part of Joe Dan’s world of Polled Herefords. In 1965, Bett met with a group of women in Austin, Texas, to organize the Texas Poll-Ettes. Bett served as President and Director of the Texas Poll-ettes and served on the Poll-ette National Board and many committees for that organization. On February 2, 2004, Bett and Joe Dan were honored at the Fort Worth Stock Show for their work as Polled Hereford breeders. Up until the last few years Bett and Joe Dan attended as many shows and sales as they could and have many friends in the Polled Hereford Association.Bett was also a member of the Brownwood Art Association, a charter member of the Brown County Republican Women’s Club, and a member of a church at Lake Brownwood called Church By The Lake where she and Joe Dan attended until the closing of the church. Bett was also a part of a bible study group that was originally formed in 1972. In January of this year, Bett hosted this special group of ladies at her home on Lake Brownwood. Bett was a member of The Early Church in Early, Texas. Bett was proud to be a member of The Early Church and dearly loved her church family.
On October 20, 2014, Bett and Joe Dan were presented a Texas flag that was flown at the Texas State Capitol of Texas by House of Representative Jim Keffer in honor of their years of support and service to the Brown County Republican Party.
Survivors include her husband, Joe Dan Weedon of Lake Brownwood, her son, Bill Weedon and wife, Onetta Weedon of Lake Brownwood, Texas; her daughter Deborah Weedon Bunnell of Lake Brownwood, Texas; grandchildren Daniel Weedon, Lisa Weedon Lucas, and Kelli Weedon Claxton; great grandchildren, Anna Weedon and Connor Lucas.
Funeral arrangements handled by Heartland Funeral Home of Early, Texas. A memorial service celebrating the amazing life of Bett Weedon will be held at Heartland Funeral Home, on Sunday, August 9, 2015, at 2:00 PM, followed immediately thereafter by burial at The Weedon Cemetery at Lake Brownwood, Texas. Friends will be received 6:00 – 8:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home. The family would like to express its deepest appreciation to Dr. Chris Stephens and the nurses with Gentiva Hospice.
